Estimating coastal flood damage costs to transit infrastructure under future sea level rise

چکیده

Abstract Future sea level rise (SLR) and associated increases in the frequency intensity of coastal flooding poses significant threats to communities transit systems. Yet current literature practice lack methods for estimating flood damage costs Here, we construct an event-specific cost estimation framework systems, simulating separately ingress into underground spaces. We apply this MBTA rail system Boston, damages under several events with SLR project expected annualized losses (EAL) through 2100 uncertain SLR. estimate EALs have doubled since 2008 $24.4 M/year are reach $58 by 2030 all scenarios. Our results suggest that absent adaptation schemes, particularly at tunnel locations, risk will continue accelerate, potentially resulting permanent inundation low-lying sections system.

Coastal flood damage and adaptation costs under 21st century sea-level rise.

Coastal flood damage and adaptation costs under 21st century sea-level rise are assessed on a global scale taking into account a wide range of uncertainties in continental topography data, population data, protection strategies, socioeconomic development and sea-level rise. Uncertainty in global mean and regional sea level was derived from four different climate models from the Coupled Model In...

Sea-Level Rise and Coastal Wetlands Impacts and Costs

The Policy Research Working Paper Series disseminates the findings of work in progress to encourage the exchange of ideas about development issues. An objective of the series is to get the findings out quickly, even if the presentations are less than fully polished. The papers carry the names of the authors and should be cited accordingly. The findings, interpretations, and conclusions expresse...

Quantifying the effect of sea level rise and flood defence – a point process perspective on coastal flood damage

In contrast to recent advances in projecting sea levels, estimations about the economic impact of sea level rise are vague. Nonetheless, they are of great importance for policy making with regard to adaptation and greenhouse-gas mitigation. Since the damage is mainly caused by extreme events, we propose a stochastic framework to estimate the monetary losses from coastal floods in a confined reg...

Future Coastal Population Growth and Exposure to Sea-Level Rise and Coastal Flooding - A Global Assessment

Coastal zones are exposed to a range of coastal hazards including sea-level rise with its related effects. At the same time, they are more densely populated than the hinterland and exhibit higher rates of population growth and urbanisation. As this trend is expected to continue into the future, we investigate how coastal populations will be affected by such impacts at global and regional scales...

Estimating coastal recession due to sea level rise: beyond the Bruun rule

Accelerated sea level rise (SLR) in the twenty-first century will result in unprecedented coastal recession, threatening billions of dollars worth of coastal developments and infrastructure. Therefore, we cannot continue to depend on the highly uncertain coastal recession estimates obtained via the simple, deterministic method (Bruun rule) that has been widely used over the last 50 years. Furth...
